Why Are You Making It So Hard For Me To Share Your Content?

Time to Share

Honestly, why are you making it so hard for me to share your great content?

I read a lot of blog posts and many bloggers simply do not take advantage of some of the best sharing plugins out there.

I am not going to name anyone, but if I have to take time to figure out how to share your blog post then I am likely not going to.

And I am not talking just about not having convenient share buttons, I am also talking about buttons that do not work.

On some blogs I click the Twitter share icon and the plugin chosen does not create a shortened link.

Not the end of the world however many times the tweet exceeds the 140 character limit.

You may be thinking, Peter why are so being so nasty?

Don’t blame me, blame Ana. :)

Ana wrote a very helpful blog post -> 202 Bite-Sized Tips To Insanely Increase Your Blog Traffic

And number 47 on that list is “Make it easy to share what you are doing“.

So, how will you make it easier for me to share your content?

  • Have social media share buttons at the beginning of your post
  • Have social media share buttons at the end of your blog post
  • Make sure your buttons work by testing them
  • Don’t list every conceivable social media site

I use “Digg Digg” at the beginning of my posts and “OnlyWire” and “Share this” at the end.

I even slip in a Twitter share button at the beginning of the comment section.

Some may think this is overkill and probably is, but it does cater to those who like to share before they read the post and to those who prefer to read the post first.

My last point involves plugins that can list hundreds of social media sites. Nothing worse that searching through a list looking for the Twitter button.

What social media sites should you select for your site?

Definitely Facebook and Twitter. Personally I like Digg, Google Buzz and Stumbleupon as well.

I leave it up to you as there are so many, however try to keep it to a manageable few, no more than six.

The great thing about “OnlyWire” is that you make it very easy for those registered with the service.

A couple of clicks and they are sharing your content on all of their subscribed services.

Another tip, submit your post to Digg first so that your readers can digg it with one click.

Here is your call to action -> Take a critical look at your blog and ask yourself if it is easy for your readers to share your content.

Try sharing your post to see exactly what your readers are faced with, plus it is a good way to test your links to ensure they work.

Some bloggers make it very hard for you to share. This can at times put off visitors to your site as I am sure many people belong to at least one social media site. Your post has really brought this out and also shown ways to make sharing easier for readers.

  2. #2 by Raena Lynn on October 19, 2011 - 10:04 am

    Hi Peter,

You are completely correct with bringing up this question. I visit many blogs also and I’ve wondered:

    1) Why it is so difficult to either find the social buttons
    2) Discover that some do not work
    3) Social Media Buttons cannot be found!
    4) There is a list of several “unknown” buttons
    5) There are “too many” buttons!

I agree that we may as well stay with the popular ones because there are so many and subscriptions are required for most of them. It is anybody’s choice to subscribe to what they want, however my preference is that I do not want to be subscribed to hundreds of sites.

Most visitors leave a site fairly quickly when it isn’t a smooth transaction to simply share the love!

You advised us to “Take a critical look at your blog and ask yourself if it is easy for your readers to share your content.” I agree with you that testing is also important. Make sure buttons are working!

Peter I totally agree with you (although I will recheck all my buttons to make sure they are working correctly). I hate it when I have to search to include a comment on the post I’ve just enjoyed reading. Some of them are hidden really well and then their are others that, as you say, the buttons don’t take you anywhere.

I don’t believe you need to apologize for sounding nasty, it is a fact, we are in business and imagine how ticked we would be if any business owner published the wrong phone number or location on the bottom of their ad.

    Good stuff Peter !

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for sharing this post about making it easy to share content.

I totally agree . . . making it easy for others to share content increases their interest in helping with syndication. I enjoy reading blog posts and learning for others. But, I’m more likely to share a post when all of the buttons are easy to find and in working order.

The Digg Digg AJAX feature is great because it moves buttons up/down the page margin as the reader is scrolling. Buttons are always visible!

    Again, thanks . . . and

So they must first understand and be aware how these share buttons can drastically increase their blog traffic and exposure.

What is the plug in or other means that you created the “Connect With Peter On” widget (?) at the top right of your blog? I have tried “Social Media Widget” but it’s not as sharp and crispy as yours!

Also, I have had difficulty with the OnlyWire plug in (yes the official one) as I cannot save the settings. Their blue logo will not show in the displayed button (like yours does). I wonder if there is a problem with WP 3.0.1? In other words ;-) which WP ver do you use now?

      Hey Richard

The plugin at the top right is “Find me on”.

As for OnlyWire, I do have the latest version of WP installed (3.0.1).

I suggest removing OnlyWire completly from your blog, that is delete it, and then try reinstalling it. In the past when I had unexplained errors with a plugin I found that worked.

      Hey Stacy

Your list is not too bad, icons are a bit small

I would suggest having more than one share plugin, one with nice large icons for the main sites and the other like you have it now

    Hi Peter,

awesome post, you are absolutely right. I want my stuff to be shared mainly on Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Stumbleupon and Buzz. I leave it up to my readers if they’d like to share my stuff elsewhere. So I use the Fixel Social Bookmarks Plugin, and some folks share my posts on sites I never would have dreamed of ;-) So it’s important to keep both points of view in mind: yours and your reader’s.

If I want to share posts and I don’t know how – I use the bit.ly sidebar I installed in my Firefox browser.

    Take care

    Hi Peter
    Thanks for sharing the list.
I like to keep things simple I have the basics
which is twitter, facebook and my share button
    at the end.
I also have a hard time on some blogs as to
where to leave a comment. Have you ever had
to search to find the comment section? That’s
    frustrating too.

      Hello Debby

Yes, I have had that frustration of trying to figure out how to comment on some blogs :)

    Hey Peter,

I like your last tip (well they were all great but that last one I hadn’t thought of like that).

It sure is easier to digg it if it’s already been dug. I never liked being the first to share my own content, but that makes a lot of sense.

    Thanks!

I digg a lot of blog posts, so I figure that digging my own is not a bad thing

    Hey Peter,

Spot on! It’s so frustrating when you can’t share other bloggers’ content. They simply take this for granted.

It’s also easier when the share buttons are also placed at the end of the post, instead of having to scroll back up to use them.

Because you have made it so easy for me to share your content, I just did Peter! :)

Thanks for bringing this up, many bloggers need to read this post.

    All the best,

    Peter,
Great point about making it easy at the start of the blog.
I have been thinking about adding more than just the twitter button at the top, so looks like that will be in the future.
Your idea of testing your buttons by sharing the post yourself is also a great way to start creating links, at least seems to me it a good way to “prime the pump.
    Thanks for sharing
    and as always.
    make it a great day.

    I second that, Peter!

Besides the fact that I fully agree with Ana’s post :) , I absolutely definitely don’t get it why some bloggers make it so difficult to share content.

Don’t they want to be read?

I am off to share your post, Peter, because you DO make it easy (and because you did mention me in it, I am honored)!
