Why I started my own Home Business

I have a very good career so why the heck would I start my own home business?

Right now I am thinking far into the future when I finally retire. The problem is I like to work and I will always want to work. I also like to travel and my goal is to do both.

In retirement I could work as a private Chartered Accountant part-time, however that would require me to be tied to my desk. Not my dream retirement.

I envision myself travelling 90% of the time, setting up shop in some exotic location, while at the same time earning enough income to supplement my retirement fund and maintain my lifestyle.

I could see myself hanging out in London UK for a few months checking out the local horse races, then head off to Dubai for their Word Cup. After Dubai I would spend a few months travelling throughout Southeast Asia, maybe even cruise around Cambodia and Vietnam on a motorcycle.

After that, who knows. That is the beauty of freedom; go where you want when you want.

With a strong desire, a powerful why, quitting suddenly becomes more painful than not quitting. That is the mindset you want to have to be successful.

Many people start “something”, whether a home business, a hobby, a diet or a new exercise routine, but they quit within a relatively short period of time. They quit because it was easy to quit, they did not have a strong why.

My question for you today is “WHY are you doing what you are doing?”

Please comment below, or better yet make your own “Why” video and I will feature it on YouTube.

    Hi Peter,

Love your post and video! I hit 30 and realised that I was on a fast track to nowhere, at least the way I was headed was not going to get me where I wanted to be. I had just lost a business, and didn’t have any want to move up in the ranks of the job that I had (I am not very much of a ‘yes’ person if i think something is not right!).

The possibility of having an online business that I could plug into anywhere in the world via the internet tantamounts to the greatest new business idea that has ever come my way! No premises, stock, wages anything… Production costs for digital products? It takes way all of the ‘old school’ pain in the butt issues, pretty much every single one of them.

Looking at all this and the geographical freedom it would include, suddenly the prize was far too great to ever give up on! I even gave up drinking for the extra 2 hours on a sunday morning that I would be able to be online… (working as opposed to procrastinating I should add lol)

Thanks again for the great ‘upper’ of a video :)

I worked in a business process outsourcing (BPO)/ call center before I decided to have my own business online as Virtual assistant and SEO Consultant for US and UK marketers.

I was then going to be promoted for a supervisory position before I had an issue with my team leader. When I cannot stand the stress at the office. I resigned.

Honestly. I hate working in the office and the salary is not that high. Plus you take a lot of your precious time commuting to and from your office. And I also need to pay for high fees for boarding houses in the metro.

Now, I am enjoying freedom. I earn a decent amount at home and get to travel every now and then. As long as there in internet connection, I have no problems.

I am in the process of automating the system and hopefully I could set it 80-90 percent automated by the end of the year.

I am also in the process of setting up a freelance web design and SEO consulting firm to be able to provide more jobs here in my place.

And that’s a noble goal. haha

I love the beach. I live in San Diego so started my home based business so I would only have to work 4 hours a day, work from anywhere and have the income to play tennis, golf, travel and visit my family more often.

    Peter,
I'm 56 yrs. old,on disability (bad Heart),so my options are limited.I'm trying to learn to market online so I can make life a little easier for my 74 yr.old mother, and my 33 yr.old daughter. If money was no object,I'd like to travel the world on a motorcycle and paint.I “use” to paint for about 10 years, then I stopped for personal reasons, but the passion to get back to art is there,I just don't have the time,as I spend upwards of 14 hours a day online, trying to learn internet marketing and to find some type of reoccurring income. So far that has eluded me.But if persistence and pure determination will win the day, then sometime in the future my vision of being “Free” to live the “Dream” will come true ! When I was a budding young accountant my next door neighbor was an aspiring artist. One day we were in his back yard and he asked me to help with his painting, which involved throwing paint at the canvas :)

He made a good living leasing his paintings to restaurants who wanted original art. I know he did quite well at it because I prepared his tax returns.

My advice for you is be passionate about what you do online. Concentrate on one aspect of marketing until you master it.

I love your video Peter! Sound quality is fantastic considering you are on a bus! Did you use an external mic?

4 years ago I started a home based business.

My why is to create a training company to empower others to live their greater purpose and train in live events in the US and Japan. My other why is to take care of my parents financially if needed for retirement and to host a family reunion yearly in a different destination in the world.

The benefits I received from having a home based business was nothing short of priceless. I've saved over $15,000 on taxes, made important connections for my training company, got mentoring to grow personally and develop leadership skills, travel to new places and explore, and am blessed with a committed team that is growing with or without me.

We are born entrepreneurs but programmed to be employees.

Why? Because I want to do more with my life, I don't want to look back in 5, 10 or 20 years and regret not just giving it a go.

I want to travel, meet wonderful people. teach my son about the good things in life and I don't just mean things to do with money.

I want to see beauty all around me and I want happiness. I want to say that I've lived!! That's why!

    Great blog post Peter!

  16. #18 by drericagoodstone on July 2, 2010 - 4:45 am

Why am I doing what I'm doing? Several reasons. I have studied and worked with clients dealing with issues about love, relationships, sexuality, and mind-body-spirit connections. Now I want to share what I know on a bigger scale, to help more people heal and live more fulfilling lives. And in the process, make more money and delegate/outsource more of the tasks so I can have more free time for travel, tennis, socializing and other activities.

My why is wanting to be able to pay for things that I couldn't before. For instance, I would love to go on vacation with my family (grandmom, mom, uncles) and be able to pay for everything. I want to be able to enjoy those vacations and i've never enjoyed feeling constrained on my experiences because the money is a factor.

There's much more but one of the reasons is to remove financial limitations.

    Thanks Peter!

It's a matter of choice . . . and the choice becomes a matter of which is the more rewarding in the long-run, no matter how painful and challenging the process is right now. Most people still tend to choose what appears to be the easier way — the 9-5 job with all the “security” and regular paycheck. Yeah…right…..we see where that has gotten a lot of people in recent times, haven't we!

Why? Why? Why? Because I have a vision. Because if I can inspire somebody to make something better of their life it will all be worth it. Because I have something to say to the world. Because I love to write and I hate to be told what to do. I made a terrible secretary and I felt too trapped running a brick and mortar business. Having my own business was great but having to put a sign on the fence to leave to eat lunch was really terrible. Because it is our born right to live lives of freedom.

Retiring my husband and seeing my 23 year old son leave his job was a big WHY I have been able to experience. I wish more people would be able to experience it. Rebuild a life. The recession took my 15 year training business and drained my IRA. As I am doing that (creating a business) the process is challenging but also rewarding – connecting with other entrepreneurs. My training business included lots of opportunities to travel where I wanted — and where my wife wanted (very important!) and that is what I intend to restore.

Good to be reminded of the basic factors in a business!

I am in interent marketing because I wanted more in my life and in todays society you have to have plenty of money to travel and do things that I like. Peter,

I loved the “Why” video and all the little captions, but to get to the reason of the video is “Why” you made it. A “Why” that many of us work form home and are successful is that we are not selfish and want others to be like us. The freedom of not working for “The Man” 70+ hours a week for a gold plated watch after 25 years….. yes the financial freedom is nice but helping others is the bigger picture. The more of us that become successful online shows more people that this is real and it can be done. !

I change my WHY’s every now and then. That’s just me, haha. But, the main reason stays the same, I don’t want to be limited to what I can do once I “retire”. I want to have options and basically the freedom to do whatever I want to do at any given time.

    Hi Peter,

The video is fantastic ~ especially luv how you added the captions :-) Without a strong enough WHY, you’re not really headed anywhere, and I think its sad that some many people quit before they ever get started on something. I have similar WHY’s to yours…my son will be going to college in a couple of years, and I want to travel, on my terms ~ to have the time and money to go where I want & to stay as long as I desire, and at the same time, know that because I worked my business and got it to a certain level, I’ll still be making income even if I’m not “working”. This was a wonderful post (and video!), and I appreciate you having shared it :-)

    Hey Peter,

Great video – everyone watching it will want to be where you are now.! It’s very important that we keep reminding ourselves WHY we started our businesses in the first place…

In network marketing, just like in any other industry, there are obstacles and challenges to overcome if one wants to be successful.

If your ‘WHY’ is big enough, then you’ll figure out the ‘HOW’. If it’s not big enough, then you’ll feel sorry for yourself, crumble and go back to your comfort zone.

Giving my family the best life and spending quality time with them is my biggest WHY!

    Thanks for sharing.

Peter, I just love the way you put this..”quitting suddenly becomes more painful than not quitting”.

This is the best way of putting it that I have ever come across, and it is absolutely true. Only when this happens will you know that you have truly discovered your “why”.

For me, it is to be able to build my dream home overlooking the sea & to retire with an income that will allow me the time & freedom to enjoy travelling. Um…why is travel such a big issue with us?

      Hey Michael

I use that quote all the time because if so true.

As for travel, I think because we want to live some sort of exotic lifestyle.

Hi Peter – it’s so true isn’t it, that the WHY is the fuel behind the HOW? Continued success in your (ad)ventures!

    Cheers Kiaran

    Hey Peter,

Great shot! Next time shot one while you are on the speed boat.

Now, it is important to know ‘why’ you want to build any kind of business. Better yet, even to do anything that is going to provide a lifestyle. Good pointers my friend!

    Chat with you later…

The speed boat was a wild ride and I was worried I would drop the camera, I just hung on for my life :)

    Hi Peter,

Awesome video! We share the exact same WHY. It has always been mine and I have traveled and lived in many different places as a result BUT… I realized eventually that I was not building anything for my future because I just kept on moving around. Having an online business allows me to do both – perfect solution. And of course now I don’t have to worry about finding jobs wherever I find myself. :)

Isn’t great to be able to setup shop anywhere in this world?

whether it is in your backyard with your family or some exotic beach.
