Today I am going to look at my external and internal links to determine which ones should be “nofollow” links and which ones should open in a new window.
I am not a PageRank hog, but I do not see any reason to pass PageRank to any external websites except for comments and possibly other blog posts.
I also do not want to pass PageRank to certain internal pages, like my Privacy Policies.
As for whether or not to open a new window my rule is simple, all external links should open to a new window while internal links do not.
I do not know about you but I hate it when a website opens new windows for internal links. I end up with many browser windows opened for one site.
However I do want to open a new window when someone clicks an external link because I do not want them to forget about my site.
To make these changes depends on the theme and plugins used.
Some themes are “SEO” optimized which I hope means you have complete control over your internal and external links in the theme.
Some plugins will have options for “nofollow” and whether or not they open in a new window. Many do not.
No matter which theme you have you will still have to deal with plugins and may have to dig deep and make some code changes.
Below are some videos on how I modified my theme and plugins to achieve my linking goals.
Make sure you click the Full Screen icon in the bottom right of the video after you start to play, otherwise you are not going to be able to see what I am doing.
Video 1 – Overview
Video 2 – Modify “Find me on” Plugin
Video 3 – Top Commentators Plugin and Text Widget
Video 4 – Google Friend Connect and Networked Blogs
Video 5 – WP-Policies Plugin and my Theme Footer
Video 6 – A closer look at editing WordPress plugins
Video 7 – Theme Header
Video 8 – Comments
I know that is a lot of videos so here is a quickie summary.
1. Whether modifying a theme or plugin to find external links in the code search for “href=”
2. Once found you should see coding like “a href=http:” etc
3. I find the best place to add my code is between the “a” and the “href=”
4. To make a link “nofollow” add rel=’nofollow’ or rel=”nofollow” depending on how the code is using quotes
5. To force a link to open in a new window add target=’_blank’ or target=”_blank”
6. A little tip – use \” instead of just ” if the coding is confusing, ie target=\”_blank\” – by doing this you do not have to worry about how the coder is using quotes in their code
And that’s it
You could always just tell your webmaster what your goals are for internal and external linking and they can take care of it for you.
Me, I like to fool around with code.

Peter,
OK, I just watched the 5-minute video on comments. CommentLuv let’s the commenter have a dofollow link back to their blog post that is specified. However, you have the nofollow for their blog URL home page or main web address. If I leave that one as a dofollow , what are the downsides? Will that have a negative effect on my Google Page Rank? I have a PageRank of three. If I follow (no pun intended) all of your advice on dofollow and nofollow links, I guess your saying that will also help my Google Page Rank, correct? Think it will be enough to bring me up to a Page Rank of 4 ? Just wondering. Thanks for all your Major effort here! Are you shooting those videos with Camtasia?
Thanks,

Peter,
What can I say? Tons of thought and lots of effort went into this post and these videos. I didn’t watch them all because I don’t use all the plugins and I do use Thesis Theme. The videos I watched were very clear on where to paste those rel=”nofollow” links.
If a comment has a link back to their blog, that’s a reward to the commenter for commenting on my blog. Are you saying that should be a dofollow or nofollow link? Someone else made a comment about this above and now I’m confused. I haven’t watch your whole series in order, yet, but I plan to do so soon cause it’s such good stuff.
Thanks, again!

I give a dofollow link to every comment using CommentLuv plugin. Here is my strategy – I make my blog a nofollow blog then I add strategic dofollow links. Commentors should always be rewarded with a dofollow link.

Hi Peter,
I have to admit i sometimes prefer internal links opening in new windows, when the website has a difficult structure and i’d have a hard time remembering where i started from. But these cases are only exception, off course.
Thank you for the summary, it helps a lot. But i promisse i’ll also finish the videos when i get some spare time.

Excellent advice and I agree with what you say about new windows opening up for outside websites, and not for internal pages. The no follow tag is one which has brought some controversies. As a rule, I try not to use it as I monitor closely what goes on in my blog and the links that I add to some of my articles. Since I am the only writer (for the moment) it is an easy task to stay on top of.

Do you suggest us to follow that rule on our blog? Do you think this is gonna help us ranking in search engines. Thanks for your hard work.

Hey Peter,
I totally agree with internal links opening in the same page and external links in a new tab. I find it very annoying when I click on a comment link for example and I get redirected to that site. And if I check its pages, then I have to click the back button a lot of times to get back to the site I was reading in the first place.

But next time I play around in the code I will definitely keep a eye open for the follow/no follow code.

Hi Peter,
I am so glad to see that you are in my group again! I started studying your series, How to Attract your Niche to your Blog, Day 1 & 2. Now I have the opportunity to complete the series. I don’t know about you, but it takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to syndicate my group persistently and consistently with quality commentary, so whoever is my group gets first priority!
I really want to convert my blog to have a static landing page. Everything you said makes sense. I’ve already watched parts 1 and 2 and I now have the time to commit to 3, 4, and 5. I’m grateful that you broke up the process into 5 parts.
After watching all of your videos in part 3, I think I’m capable of replacing code to have the control that you have with your blog. My goal is to do a complete conversion and I am really glad that you prepared the videos so I can review as much as I need to and complete the task.
I really do not like when an external link does not open to a new tab and jumps out of my blog. My theme allows me to choose to have external links open in a new tab, so I’m not sure if I have to change code to do that part. I think your explanation is thorough enough to complete that task if I have to.
I don’t like working with code, but I am the webmaster so I need to learn how to do it. I really appreciate this post and I am looking forward to parts 4 & 5. Regards.

Hi Peter, you weren’t kidding when you said you liked to fool around a bit with the code!
Very comprehensive video series.
I have to admit, I hadn’t really thought about opening internal links in new tabs or not. I tend to always open everything in a new window because very often I haven’t finished reading the page I was on & want to be able to go back easily. But I have to admit, sometimes when I go to close my browser, it is annoying to have one website open in about 6 different windows
As for ‘do-follow’ or ‘no-follow’, I say ‘c’est la vie’! I try not to get too hooked about about it. Will be interesting to come back and read the results of your research. Thanks for the post

To follow or not to follow is an interesting subject.
I find, in general, that allowing follow on links encourages more of them and more comments.
Metaphysically, if you share the love and allow others to use your PR, you can get a lot more links which google likes!

A lot to digest at one time. Even though you explained NO-Follow, I do not understand how not following someone else’s page can affect YOUR page ranking. It may increase their PR.
Second question is, I know this is elementary but I still don’t quite get it, “all external links should open to a new window while internal links do not.”
What do you mean by a “new window.”

What a thorough and impressive post Peter! I have to be honest, I am not a techie at all, and really don’t like spending time on this sort of thing. I was intrigued by your suggestion to keep internal links from opening in a new window ~ I’ve always made ALL my links open in a new window ~ because I personally hate when I click a link as I’m reading and it DOESN’T open in a new window and I’ve now lost the post I was reading. And when people don’t open an external link in a new window (and sadly SO many don’t), I get really frustrated and don’t feel like going back to their post bc they certainly aren’t making it easy to!
I’ll have to think this over regarding internal links….as for the rest of it, well, perhaps someday…:)

Interesting point Beth
But here is the thing, if the content was compelling why did they click the link
Sometimes we may make a reference to another post with the idea of interlinking our blog posts. So why not save those links for the end of the post rather than the beginning or the middle.

Opening a new window when someone clicks an internal link is a decision to be made based on the type of link it is.
However I was at one site recently that before I knew it I had ten windows open for just their site.
I see no reason to do that

I didn’t know about several of the plugins you mentioned so I will check them out. I will second the earlier request for you to tell us a little more about the reasons for dofollow or nofollow. Have a powerful week! Allegra

I like these videos. it gives me a chance to formulate some ideas on how I am going to makeover my blog.
I have to guess from the comments here that you are still doing keyword research? I am looking forward to seeing that part of it as well. Keep up the great work and I hope it achieves the results you are looking for!

Hey Cheryl
Yes I am still doing keyword research but I have falling behind in the redesign due to my main source of income talking up my time during the last few weeks.
I will be back on track this week.

I Peter,
I am not a Pagerank fan either. I think what matters most is the value we give to our readers. In my case, I only put the nofollow tag to untrusted external links. I do not mind placing a link to peterfuller.org because I know is a trusted source. In my opinion, this pagerank sculpting issue is overrated. According to Matt Cuts this not longer works in internal pages using the nofollow tag. However, this can be achieved using elaborated javascript links.
In the case of which links must have the “target=_blank” attribute, I think only external links must have this attribute, I do not want take away my readers from my blog.
Thanks for sharing those videos Peter, I had some trouble watching them but I did. Despite I do not use wordpress plugins but my own CMS, I often take a look at the code of them for adding new features to mine.

You raise some good points Daniel.
I also do not believe in going overboard on pagerank sculpting.
However even Cutts makes a reference to adding nofollow to his own RSS feed.
So for internal pages I use it sparingly, like for my RSS feed and the necessary :Terms of Conditions” type pages.

Hi Peter,
Must admit when I started reading and saw all your videos, heart dropped at the thought of all that code and difficulties…..Luckily, as everyone seems to agree you are a great teacher and have a really good way of explaining things, so it was all much easier than I expected.
Thanks for this – now I have to go back and check out number 1 and 2 of this series:-)

Peter your videos were so simple to get through. You gave a ton of value. I have never really given much thought to the no follow or do follow internal vs. external links. It’s just one of those things that I’d rather outsource to someone as I may totally mess it up. I do see the value in it and thank you for sharing.

Hey Golda
For many outsourcing to your web-designer is the solution.
Just do not leave the decisions to them
#76 by Nicole Rushin on February 19, 2011 - 3:57 pm
I think you should back up a step and explain what ‘no follow – do follow’ means. Afraid I was a little lost here, but it is interesting to know that we don’t have to have our internal links open in new windows. That is something I can quickly change and fix.
#77 by Peter Fuller on March 6, 2011 - 11:11 am
Hey Nicole
“Nofollow Dofollow” are just directions to the search engine on whether or not you want to pass page rank to a link. From Google’s point of view it is about whether or not you trust the website you are linking to.
I do not believe in going too crazy about creating “nofollow” links. I just do not think there is any reason to pass page rank to the big sites, like facebook etc especially if my facebook profile is already linking back to this blog.
I prefer to give all of my great commenter’s dofollow links
It is certainly a controversial subject, especially with the latest google slap.

Hi Peter, wow, you’ve done a lot of work in this post. I use the Thesis theme so thank goodness a lot of this work is done for me. Although, thesis is supposed to be “easier”, I found it more difficult at first, because I’d become used to “hacking” away at the word press php files.
I don’t like “new windows” on the same site either, I was a member of a training site, where a New window opened up for everything I clicked on. It was really annoying and takes up too much memory on the computer.
Have fun with your coding! regards from Julieanne

Hey fellow coder Julieanne
Some have questioned whether or not it is a good idea to open new windows if someone follows an internal link.
I would say 99% of the time it is not necessary, especially with the reasons you give, thanks.

Hi Peter!
Actually this is very similar to the changes I was making to my blog’s external and internal linking recently.
I play around with my plugins to seamlessly integrate them into my blog’s look and feel, as some default features are too different.
Is there a particular reason you happen to use your image and details right at the bottom of your blog, rather than as the header beside your name?

Thanks, I was worried the videos would be too technical.
One very important thing to remember, if you make changes to your theme or plugins then you need to keep track of them.
I save them in a spreadsheet.
The reason, if the theme or plugin has an update you will lose your changes.

recently come across your blog through facebook and found lots useful information here. thanks a lot going to check out other posts also.
Having a dofollow and nofollow links on your blog is always a topic of discussioon because most of them says its not good to give away your link juice to others while others think that by making a dofollow you will get more comments on your blog and increase readership on your blog
