Something You May Not Know About The Law of Attraction

Law of Attraction verses Law of Awareness

I think most of us are aware of the Law of Attraction.

In simplest terms we attract what we think.

The law is really an observation.

And in many circumstances a personal observation.

Some, like Wattles and Hill explained the observation in terms of placing out thoughts in the “interspaces of the universe” or ether.

Others have been looking to Quantum Physics for answers.

And some have made it into some sort of mystical secret.

The problem with looking at the law in isolation is that it becomes a push button solution to your desires. Those who promote the law this way know this because it helps create push button sales for their products.

All I have to do is think about my desires and the universe will provide them

If only it was that easy.

I promised you something you may not know about the law and I alluded to it above, and here it is:

  • The Law of Attraction is really an observation and requires the Law of Awareness to make it work.

We all know that if we sit in isolation thinking of riches nothing will happen, right?

Something more than chance is required.

Before I wrote this post I searched for other people’s thoughts on the Law of Awareness and found mostly mystical explanations.

I am not much of a mystical person even though I do occasionally refer to “kharma”.

The first step is self or inner awareness.

This inner awareness can be as simple as developing the desire for something or more complex such as performing a critical look at our lives.

A good example of this is Kathy Jodrey’s post about attracting abundance.

Kathy tells a great story about attracting a Jet Ski.

Kathy, through watching someone else Jet Ski realized that she wanted one for her family, but at an affordable price.

Her new inner awareness that she wanted a Jet Ski for her family suddenly manifested itself in her neighbourhood.

But did it?

Her inner awareness actually manifested the second step of awareness, her outer awareness.

When Kathy realized what she wanted, she now became aware of a unwanted Jet Ski in her neighbour’s yard. It was always there, she just never noticed it.

Kathy became aware that she could now own her own Jet Ski but she had to take an uncomfortable action, knocking on her neighbour’s door to ask how she could obtain it.

Some people justify their lives by saying that others are lucky because they get all of the opportunities.

Luck has nothing to do with it.

Those “others” are just more aware of opportunities when they present themselves.

Have you ever been given a thought about something, say from TV and then suddenly you see it everywhere?

Guess what, it was always there but you were not aware of it.

The last step of awareness is to create awareness in others of what you are doing to achieve your desires.

In business some refer to this as “Attraction Marketing”.

My friend Marcus Baker wrote a great blog post about how Attraction Marketing works and doesn’t work.

Here is a quote from his article:

“You cannot truly value others or share value until you are totally aware of your own value

In Napoleon Hill’s famous book “Think and Grow Rich” he tells the story of Edwin Barnes. Barnes did not place his thoughts in the mysterious ether as Hill would explain, but rather through his actions and words he placed a seed, a thought, in Edison’s mind. He made Edison aware of him, enough so that he got his foot in the front door.

First we become aware of our desires.

Second we manifest those desires through our own outer awareness by seizing opportunities.

And finally, through our outer appearance, attitude, actions, and our spoken and written word, we create awareness in others in what we are doing.

If you are attracting people and events to your life that you do not desire that means your outer behaviour does not match your inner desires, you are not congruent.

When was the last time you had a really good talk with yourself and done some critical thinking of where you are right now in life and where you want to be?

Or are you living life unconsciously hoping things will work out?

Some may argue that they are living life consciously?

If you do not have a written plan for your desires and steps to achieve them, then I would argue you are living life unconsciously, just hoping things work out.

In my next post I will share my personal story and how I have applied the Law of Awareness.

For now share your thoughts in the comments below. I welcome differing opinions on this subject.

If you have your own story of awareness please share.

And finally I appreciate any sharing of this post through the various social media buttons at the top or bottom of this post.

    Hi Peter,

you are making a great point about the Law of Attraction being connected with the Law of Awareness.

Abraham-Hicks has made an impact with their teachings on me. What I learned from them is that the law of attraction is always at work, what we attract depends on our vibration/frequency.

Awareness ties in with that by being aware about how we feel and we can change that through our thinking.

Thank you so much for the food for thought!

Awesome post, Peter. This is my first time of hearing about the Law of Awareness. You’re right, you can’t just sit down and visualize having something you want without taking action towards attracting that thing into your life. You have a part to play in this miracle process. The important thing to note is that in the long run, we literally become what we think about. This is why it is very important to guard your thought life.

    Thanks for sharing, Peter!

It is very true that we attract what we think. If you think positively then positive things happen to you and the other way round. Creating awareness is also another great thing to do.

Hey Barry, thank you for your comment.

I have to admit I thought The Secret was a bunch of gobbly-gook to until I realized that The Law of Attraction is just an observation, a mistaken one in my opinion, and it really comes down to the Law of Awareness.

Hi Peter the law of attraction is a misnomer because if I accept what is said it means all bad things come because I thought it, which is untrue. Many things in life can’t be blamed by the law of attraction. Last week a friend’s son stepped on a airplane. 8 hrs later he and 4 friends are dead. Based on the interpretation of the law of attraction he and his friends caused it to happen. BS unmitigated bs I have heard so many times I am sick to death with it. The law of attraction statement are based on a sale game nothing less than that. I sells a lot courses surrounded in a black cloud of fear. Nonsense we don’t attract a lot of the stuff because our thinking caused it. It is just another gold covered fart sold by positive thinkers. I always have a positive attitude in spite of everyday setback or what is thrown at me. I have 30 years of straight commission selling under my belt. The type of sell or starve. I have taken a lot of Hoe-rah courses but as soon as the hoorahs have died down you have to get of you butt and make the calls. It where it comes down to this. You plod on make the calls close the sales. Pay no attention to anything but the goal on the close. If you have to make ten calls to make one sale you keep going untill you do. Come Hell or high water, attitude positive. Not positive thinking it does not work and if some one want me to explain this ask the question and I will give you the science on it. Thank you

      Hello Bill

      Thanks for the great comment.

If you read my post carefully you will see that I agree with you, to an extent :)

I do not believe that our thoughts attract things to us directly.

Rather our thoughts make us aware of things that are already there.

When we manifest our thoughts through action we will attract people to us, not objects.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

      Peter

  7. #10 by Walter on August 23, 2010 - 1:41 am

I have been suspicious of the law of attraction. But you have eloquently explained its true application here. I always believe that we can have anything we want provided that we take the necessary action. Intent alone will not give us anything.

An old mantra once said: Everything is created twice, first in the mind, then in reality.

Sadly, most of us are stuck with the first creation, which is only on the mind. :-)

    Peter,
Great post on the Law of Attraction and some of the “flaws” people apply in it. In psychology, we talk about “magical thinking” which is a defense against living in reality. While having a clear vision and positive intention is really important to life and increases our awareness of opportunities, we must also take ACTION! The example I always use is the one where I know that electricity works, yet if I don’t get up and turn on the light switch, I’m going to be sitting in the dark!

Like the way you developed the idea of attraction marketing. I agree that you must take action for what you want otherwise it will only be a desire.

    Hi Peter,
Great to ‘meet’ you today! After reading your post a couple of times and some of the comments I feel like we’ve known each other for ever! I’ll have to come back just to read the rest of the comments as they are as interesting as the post!

I am a soon to be certified LOA coach so I do feel I have a certain understanding of LOA and how to implement it ~ so if you ever feel like you’d like to set up a teleseminar for you and your Tribe, then count me in!

I agree with your comment about the Law of Awareness although I have never heard it referred to like that… I know of the Reticular Activating System which is that part of the brain which is responsible for filtering and is believed to control the ability to consciously focus attention on something plus it acts like a filter between your conscious mind and your subconscious mind.

It appears to take instructions from your conscious mind and pass them on to your subconscious. For example, the instruction might be, “listen out for anyone saying my name” or “look out for red sports cars like the one I’d like to buy”.

The common test for this is to ask yourself to look around the room for everything that might be red and then try to remember what you saw that was green! Almost impossible… and that is the RAS at work…

One thing that I would like to comment on is what you said here:
“If you are attracting people and events to your life that you do not desire that means your outer behaviour does not match your inner desires, you are not congruent.”

I believe it is the other way around that creates the incongruence.. it is rather because we are not aligned internally with what we desire… our vibration and our subconscious are talking another language to that which we think we are asking for.. and we can measure that by what is showing up in our lives… Does this make sense or are we just saying the same thing in different ways?

      Hello Sandhan

Thanks for the great comment, albeit my comment is a bit late.

I agree, it can also be an internal incongruence. We think we know what we want but in reality we want something else.

It is kind of like pretending, just admit what you are attracting is what you really want.

    thank you for this Peter

I recently spoke with Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter who feels much as you do. As it happens I do feel there is something else happening as well – mystical? But even mysticism can now be better explained in more scientific terms as we develop the tools to measure previously unexplained ‘vibes’. Quantum physics is about this.

I like your idea of inner awareness and outer awareness. Thought provoking article and I intend to follow up on the links you give us.

That is one heck of an explanation Peter I very much enjoyed reading it. You have put a new perspective on the law of attraction for me.

Its funny I almost blogged about the law just last week. I actually started writing it but have not finished yet. Mine was going to be title “Law Of Attraction hoax or real.”

I too feel the law works because of the different actions we take and thoughts we manifest from thinking about what it is we want. I never thought about the law of awareness, that makes perfect sense.

Here is my awareness thought. When someone you know buys a certain car, I will start to see that same type of car all over the place. I am sure they have always been there before I just never noticed them

Gidday Peter I used to deny the sort of thing your pointing out but it is so true. You can drive past a business for months and not even notice it’s there until you need what it is that is pictured on their front sign or window.

And it’s these subtle connections we make when we’re shopping or looking at catalogs. So the same goes for ourselves as brand names I guess. We aim to show we are “connected” with our niche but to do that we need to position ourselves where we can be noticed. On the front page of Google search results would be nice :)

The important thing I am learning from people such as yourself is the importance of adding value to relationships you form though Social Media. Thank you.

Peter – I was reminded of two things while reading your very thought-provoking post. First is a wonderful book by Jon Kabat-Zinn, “Wherever You Go, There You Are”, which is all about inner awareness and taking that little bit of time each day to be completely in the now.

The other is an example of outer awareness that I have used over and over, and that is the image of the FedEx logo that we all see numerous times throughout the day as we are out and about. Most people don’t realize there is an arrow built into that logo that all of us have seen 1000 times. If it’s never been pointed out to you, you’re probably sitting there going, “What arrow!? There’s no arrow in that logo!” Look again . . . right where the “E” meets the “x”. Once you see it, you’ll never look at that famous logo again without the arrow sticking out like a sore thumb.

The same, as you say, is true with opportunities. They are all around us, but most of the time we don’t see them because we are not using our “outer awareness”. But once something is brought to our attention, all of a sudden it seems that similar opportunities appear everywhere. It’s just a matter of opening our mind and opening our eyes.

Thanks, Peter, for a great post!

    Hi Peter,

I like the post and how you related to the lady who desired a jet ski.

Once she had the inner awareness that she wanted a jet ski, she began to take notice of her outer awarness, which led her to a deal right in her own back yard. (acres of diamonds) thought I’d throw that in there, ha, ha…

It happens to us all the time, we just aren’t “aware” of it.

We desire/want a new car. Then once we decide on the kind of car we want, (let’s say a range rover)then like magic, we start seeing range rovers every where, or so it seems.

No, the car/range rover was already there, we just hadn’t noticed it as much than now as we are more “aware.”

It’s really simple concept and nothing spooky (the secret) about it.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts,

    Willie

I think you have nailed the key to making the law of attraction really work. I can certainly see that the law of awareness has to come into play. Being aware, like you mentioned, takes full consciousness and some action as well. It is more than just thinking of what you want, though that is definitely the starting point.

Wow Peter, we are on the same level on this. I’ve been pondering this and putting this together for the past couple of months. When i saw the secret a couple of years ago it made sense, but I really didn’t get a better understanding of it until this year.

A lot of us blind ourselves from opportunities and do not become aware because of our limited beliefs and fear. Some of us see the glass as half way full while other’s half way empty although both of these concepts are there. It’s a matter of your choice and your actions.

This is a great post considering the fact I am right in the middle of a book “the magic of believing” by Claude Bristol.

I like the way he sums it up. No we can’t just sit around and wait for things to happen but the hands, our actions are only tools for the mind.

I believe our sub conscious has a lot power we are not aware of.

    Peter,

This was an awesome post and really enjoyed reading it.

I agree with Hector on the Law of Attraction being a tricky one.

When I went to play collegiate football, I remember that for me to become a starter I couldn’t just sit around and hope that someone gets hurt.

I couldn’t just hope that the coach picks me to play.

I worked at it both in the gym and on the field.

I went from the skinny 6’4″, 180 lbs. freshman to an 6’4″, 260 lbs. starter my junior year (too bad I got hurt :( ).

I dedicated myself and made things happen. Everyone noticed me, friends, family, coaches, teammates.

My advanced skills on the field attracted the coaches to give me a chance and fight for a starting position.

People at home took notice of my new physique, saying “wow, you look great”.

You work hard at it and people will take notice, just like in business.

    Have a great day,

    Hey Peter,

A great, thought provoking post. I personally don’t get too caught up in the science or spirituality behind the Law of Attraction, rather I just have faith that it works when all of your actions are congruent with your goals through, as you say, the Law of Awareness. I’m looking forward to your next post.

I also loved your take on living consciously and unconsciously. Lately, I’ve reading and listening to Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now” and he talks about how most people are living their lives in desperation and bondage, due to resentment from the past and tension from the future – they are never really in the conscious, eternal present.

Being fulfilled in the present and following your map will lead to prosperity.

    Thanks Peter,
    Wayne

    Hey Peter,

Great way to explain this because you’re absolutely right, if you’re not completely aware then it’s not going to work for you.

It reminds me of the Celestine Prophecy.

In that, you learn how to be present and aware.

    Have a great day,

      Hello Jerome

I read the Celestine Prophecy quite awhile ago, I think I need to reread it because I remember being disappointed in the end.

Maybe with a fresh outlook I won’t be this time :)

    Hi Peter,

Great discussion here and great post! I have to say that the law of attraction always feels a little bit woo-woo to me, but I do know that when my mind is faced with a problem, solutions appear and you’re right that it’s because I’m aware of them.

I loved Susan’s comment about seeing pregnant women everywhere. I had the same experience with all 3 of my kids!

    Great post!

      Hey Heather, I lke that “woo-woo” :)

Exactly, nothing ever appears, they may come by once in awhile or always be there, but it is not until we become aware of them that we notice.

      Thanks for stoping by.

Peter, this is a great article! I love how you draw attention to the fact that it has to do with awareness, what a great example with the jet ski!

The awareness factor is so true, it reminds me of each of the times I have gotten a new car. Suddenly it seems as if half of the cars on the road are that make and model!

    Hey Peter,

Awesome post! I love how you have explained the two concepts.

Sadly, some people get this wrong, they think that they can just imagine great things happening in their lives and everything will fall into place.

It takes way more than that as you have pointed out. Create inner awareness first, set and achieve your goals!

    Thanks for sharing your insights.

    Hi Peter,

that is an awesome article. If opportunity knocks on the door, we still have to get up and open the door, as someone said. Sometimes it requires courage and stepping out of the comfort zone – what 99 % of the population refuse to do. Or opportunity sometimes wears work clothes and doesn’t look like law of attraction at all.

    Thank you for sharing.

    Take care

Hi Peter excellent Post- its a fascinating subject with ideas ranging from the mystical, evangelical and scientific (quantum physics will eventually provide some answers to the subject)

As some of the commentators above have suggested ‘hope is not a strategy’!

I like Brian Tracy’s simple quote ‘we tend to attract the people and circumstances into our lives, consistent with our dominant thoughts”

    Thanks for sharing

As always Peter, an awesome post! This is something that is really close to my heart, I have been a practitioner of the Universal Laws for some time now.

The Law of Attraction is the one that is used to drive the emotion behind the whole “shebang” & was the driving force behind the “Secret” which as we all know, made marketing history.

But the Law of Attraction as you correctly point out, cannot be applied in isolation. If one studies metaphysices & how it overlaps into our lives every day, then you beging to realize that the 11 other “Forgotten Laws” are equally as important to achieving & maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

Not my place to discuss them here, besides…there’s not enough space! Do some research, a whole new world is waiting for you if you’ve not taken a look at this before!

    Stay Inspired!

Peter, you almost lost me at “mystical” and “karma”.

However, the timely mention of “awareness” brought me right back:).

That’s where I completely agree with you. As you become aware of your dreams and desires and make them your goals, you start searching for the way to fulfill them.

And that’s where the real magic begins.

I must confess I love this law of awareness. It helps me to remember that if I just keep my eyes open and make my brain work harder that the next person, the sky is the limit.

Thanks for your valuable thoughts, Peter; as always love visiting your blog!

    Hey Peter,

Of course this is a post I would find interesting! :) Thank you too for the mention and link back Pete – much appreciated!

I believe everything you could ever want is already manifest. The challenge is bringing it into your awareness so that you can access it.

So to ‘thoughts create things’, or as I would prefer to say, ‘thoughts reveal what we want’. It is the nature and energy of these thoughts that does the work.

The mistake many make is trying to change their thoughts – pretty much impossible I found. What has to change are the beliefs that deliver the thoughts. This becomes a very personal matter and I believe their are many stairways that lead there. Everybody has to find one that works for them.

    Hi Peter,

Great post! I think that’s where the movie (and book) “The Secret” gave the wrong impression. Some people thought they just have to “think” about something and they automatically would attract it. As you rightfully stated this is not so.

Thanks for setting the record straight!

I remember when I bought my new car. When I would drive around, it seemed like everybody had my car. I would see it everywhere I went. The truth is that other people already had the type of car that I now had. I just never paid attention to it until I actually got the car. It was just that my awareness shifted then.

And like Hector said, We can’t just sit around doing a whole lot of wishing and hoping and take no action. The cake won’t make itself. Action has to be taken once we realize what it is that we want.

    Great post Peter.

A great post from a great blogger, I like it Peter. I always like when people are talking about the spirit in business, and how and why it’s important.

Some of us, have to learn it, other just do it.

For me – I had to learn it – if was failing, and at last have to realize the it all was depending of ME, how I was as a person.

    So within, so without.
